Teach Amharic to children under five, live on video, from Addis Ababa.

About Us

We teach Amharic to children who hear it at home but mostly speak English. Classes are small, live and online, built on research about how young children learn language, and every session is recorded for safety.

About the Role

We are hiring the first teacher for our youngest learners: children under five, learning Amharic live, with a grown-up beside them.

This is not a classroom job. Sessions are short, joyful and full of songs, gestures, games and stories, taught in Amharic and English in whatever mix each child needs. You will teach small groups of families over live video, and you will teach the parents as much as the children: how to speak, sing and play in Amharic at home. You will also record short, playful videos that introduce new families to what we do.

You will be the first person in this role, so you will help shape it. You will be trained in how young children learn language, coached every week, and supported by a team that cares about doing this well.

What You Will Do

Lead live 20 minute sessions for small groups of families with children under five, several times a day.

Teach through songs, rhymes, gestures, puppets, stories and play, in Amharic, with English when parents need it.

Respond to each child by name, wait for their answers, and celebrate every attempt.

Coach parents, warmly, on simple ways to use Amharic at home between sessions.

Record short videos for families and for our channel.

Prepare your sessions from our lesson plans and help improve them.

Join weekly coaching and review your recordings with us.

Follow our child safety policies in everything you do.

Required

Native Amharic speaker with good spoken English.

Experience with children under five, as a kindergarten or nursery teacher, in childcare, in Sunday school, or raising younger brothers and sisters.

Warm, expressive and comfortable being playful on camera.

Able to sing in tune, and happy to do it often.

Patient and attentive, with a gift for noticing what a child is looking at and feeling.

Reliable, well organized and open to feedback.

Based in Addis Ababa, with a quiet, well lit space to teach from.

Available on weekday afternoons and early evenings, Addis Ababa time.

Strong Plus

Tigrinya.

Training in early childhood education, speech and language, or music.

A repertoire of Amharic children's songs, lullabies and games.

Puppetry, crafts or drawing.

Any experience making videos or being on camera.
